The peculiarity of the Ukrainian war is that Russia attacks Ukrainian civilian objects in violation of international laws of war. Russian troops are committing war crimes. The mass murder of civilians in Bucha is not the insanity of war, like the massacre in Songmi village during the Vietnam War, but a characteristic of Russia's current method of warfare.

What will be the outcome of this war? It is difficult to foresee the outcome of a war that is still going on, but as far as can be said at all, Russia is unlikely to win.

Victory in war is achieved when the objectives of the war are realized. The original goal of the war for Russia was to destroy Ukraine as a nation and unite it with Russia. This goal cannot be achieved because the capital has not fallen, and although the western part of Ukraine is occasionally hit by missile attacks, Ukraine will in all likelihood survive.

The purpose of the war for Ukraine is defense and the survival of the nation. If they survive, it will be a victory and achievement of the goals of the war, even at the cost of enormous damage.

In war strategy, the goal is to win or avoid defeat, but the strategic goals of Russia and Ukraine are asymmetrical.
